Vladimir Sokolov
Vladimir Aleksandrovich Sokolov was a renowned Russian clarinetist born on February 12, 1936, in Ubshor, Syktyvdinsky District, Komi Republic. He pursued his musical education at the music college in Syktyvkar and later at the prestigious Moscow State Conservatoire. Sokolov gained acclaim by winning first prize at the 1963 All-Union Competition of Musicians in Leningrad. His career included performances with esteemed ensembles such as the Beethoven Quartet, Komitas Quartet, Shostakovich Quartet, and Borodin Quartet.
From 1963 to 1990, he served as the solo clarinetist for the State Academic Symphony Orchestra of Russia (SASO) and co-founded the SASO Woodwind Quintet. Sokolov dedicated part of his career to education, teaching at the Moscow Conservatoire from 1974 and at the Central Music School from 1975. He was instrumental in establishing the Sergey Rozanov International Clarinet competition.
Throughout his career, Sokolov received significant honors, being named "Merited Artist of Russian Federation" in 1974 and "People’s Artist of Russia" in 1986. He passed away on November 13, 1999, in Moscow, leaving behind a legacy as a distinguished figure in the world of classical music.
