Steve Archer
Steve Archer, born Stephen Mark Archer on January 5, 1953, in Mojave, California, is an influential figure in the realm of contemporary Christian music. As the son of an Assemblies of God pastor, Archer began his musical journey at the tender age of nine, performing alongside his brother Tim in their father's church in California's northern San Joaquin Valley. This early exposure to music set the stage for what would become a significant career in the genre of Jesus music, a precursor to contemporary Christian music.

In the late 1960s, Steve and Tim toured with their older brother Gary as the Archer Brothers. By 1970, Steve and Tim had formed the Archers with Nancye Short and Billy Rush Masters, establishing themselves in Southern California. The Archers gained recognition for their international tours and recordings from the 1970s through the early 1990s. Their album "Fresh Surrender" earned a GMA Dove Award nomination in 1977, the same year Janice Archer replaced Short. The group achieved notable success, performing at the White House in 1978 and appearing on the Grammy Awards telecast in 1981 and 1982, where they won and were nominated for Grammy Awards, respectively.

Steve Archer's career is marked by his distinctive blue-eyed-soul performances and soft MOR ballads. In 1982, while still with the Archers, he embarked on a solo career with Home Sweet Home Records, releasing his debut album "Solo." He continued to expand his solo work after the Archers reduced their touring schedule in 1985. Archer's solo career flourished with the release of "Through His Eyes of Love" in 1983, which topped the Contemporary Christian charts. He also made history by creating the first known contemporary Christian music video.

In 1985, Archer collaborated with Marilyn McCoo on the single "Safe," which climbed to No. 2 on the national charts and was named CCM Magazine's Song of the Year. His subsequent album, "Off the Page," produced the No. 1 single "If You Were the Only One" in 1987. Archer continued to release music, including a compilation album "Hits" in 1988, and reunited with his siblings for the Archers' final album "Colors of Your Love" in 1991.

After the Archers disbanded in 1993, Archer reduced his touring schedule and eventually moved to Texas to focus on his family. His label released another compilation, "Contemporary Christian Gold," in 1994. Steve Archer remains a respected and pioneering figure in contemporary Christian music, celebrated for his contributions to the genre and his enduring musical legacy.
