Slim Dusty, born David Gordon Kirkpatrick on June 13, 1927, in Kempsey, New South Wales, Australia, was a pioneering Australian country music singer-songwriter, guitarist, and producer. Known as Australia's King of Country Music, he became a cultural icon, celebrated for his portrayal of rural Australian life through his music. Dusty wrote his first song at age 10 and adopted the stage name Slim Dusty at age 11. He began his career singing on the radio and recorded his first record in 1942.

Dusty was the first Australian artist to receive a gold record for his hit "A Pub with No Beer" in 1957 and was the first country music performer to appear at the Sydney Opera House in 1978. He recorded over 100 albums, selling more than seven million records, and was awarded 38 Golden Guitars and an ARIA award. He was inducted into the ARIA Hall of Fame and the Australian Roll of Renown.

In 1951, he married singer-songwriter Joy McKean, with whom he formed the Slim Dusty Travelling Show in 1954. Dusty was also the founding president of the Country Music Association of Australia and authored an autobiography, "Walk a Country Mile." He was honored with a state funeral after his death on September 19, 2003, in Sydney, Australia.
