Shantel
Stefan Hantel, known by his stage name Shantel, was born on March 2, 1968, in Mannheim, West Germany. He is a German DJ and producer based in Frankfurt, recognized for his innovative fusion of traditional Balkan music with electronic beats. Shantel's paternal heritage is Greek, while his maternal grandparents were Ukrainian Jews from Chernivtsi.

He began his DJ career in Frankfurt, where he was inspired by the vibrant sounds of Romani brass bands like Fanfare Ciocărlia and Boban Marković. This inspiration led him to blend Balkan Romani music with electronic elements in his DJ sets. Shantel gained acclaim for his Bucovina Club nights and released two compilations under the same name, which earned him the Club Global award at the 2006 BBC Radio 3 Awards for World Music.

Shantel's 2007 album "Disko Partizani" marked a shift from techno to a focus on Balkan roots, achieving Platinum status in Turkey. His collaboration with Oz Almog in 2011 resulted in the album "Kosher Nostra Jewish Gangsters Greatest Hits," a mix of Swing, Jazz, Twist, Charleston, and Yiddish songs. Shantel's discography includes several albums such as "Club Guerilla" (1995), "Bucovina Club Vol. 2" (2005), and "Mētrópolis" (2023), among others. His work continues to influence the dance music scene by integrating world music elements into electronic music.
