Saint Petersburg Camerata Chamber Orchestra
The Saint Petersburg Camerata Chamber Orchestra, also known as the State Hermitage Orchestra, is a distinguished Russian chamber orchestra based in Saint Petersburg. It was founded in February 1994, evolving from the St. Petersburg Conservatoire Orchestra, which was established in 1989 by the renowned Lithuanian conductor Saulius Sondeckis. Initially formed by students of the Leningrad Conservatory, the orchestra gained the unique status of being the official orchestra of the State Hermitage Museum, one of the world's premier museums, on February 14, 1994.
Under Sondeckis's leadership, the orchestra quickly became one of Russia's leading chamber ensembles, noted for its high professional level, creative boldness, and respect for orchestral traditions. The orchestra has toured extensively, performing in 15 countries, and has collaborated with illustrious musicians such as Yehudi Menuhin, Mstislav Rostropovich, Victor Tretiakov, Sergei Stadler, and Nicolai Gedda. It has also produced numerous recordings, including those under the Sony Classical label.
The orchestra's repertoire includes a wide range of works, and it has been involved in recording Bach's instrumental works. The ensemble has been a part of significant projects within the Hermitage Academy of Music, performing in the historic interiors of the Hermitage. Saulius Sondeckis, who led the orchestra from its inception, was a pivotal figure in its development, bringing his extensive experience and refined musical style to the ensemble.
