Naughty by Nature
Naughty by Nature is an influential American hip hop group formed in East Orange, New Jersey, in 1986. The group consists of Treach (Anthony S. Criss), Vin Rock (Vincent E. Brown), and DJ Kay Gee (Keir Lamont Gist). Initially known as The New Style, they gained recognition with their 1989 album "Independent Leaders" and its minor hit "Scuffin' Those Knees." Mentored by Queen Latifah, they signed with Tommy Boy Records and adopted the name Naughty by Nature.
Their breakthrough came with the 1991 hit "O.P.P.," which reached No. 6 on the Billboard Hot 100 and helped their self-titled album achieve platinum status. The group continued their success in the 1990s with hits like "Hip Hop Hooray" and "Feel Me Flow," both reaching the top 20 on the Billboard Hot 100. Their album "Poverty's Paradise" won the first-ever Grammy Award for Best Rap Album in 1996.
Naughty by Nature is celebrated for their ability to blend party anthems with gritty narratives, maintaining authenticity in hip hop while achieving mainstream success. Despite a brief hiatus, they returned with renewed vigor, exemplified by their 1999 album "19Naughty9: Nature's Fury." Throughout their career, they have remained true to their roots, continuing to live and work in New Jersey while influencing the hip hop genre globally.
