Matmatah
Matmatah is a French rock band formed in 1995 in Brest, Brittany. The band originated from a duo called the Tricard Twins, consisting of Tristan Nihouarn and Cédric Floc'h. They expanded to include bassist Eric Digaire and drummer Jean-François Paillard, adopting the name Matmatah after the Tunisian village where Nihouarn spent part of his childhood. Their music blends rock with traditional Breton influences, drawing inspiration from 1960s and 1970s rock.
Matmatah gained popularity with their debut single in 1997, featuring "Lambé An Dro" and "Les Moutons," which sold 30,000 copies. Their first album, "La Ouache," released in 1998, sold 800,000 copies, establishing them as a significant force in the French rock scene. Known for their energetic live performances, they released several albums, including "Rebelote" (2001), "Archie Kramer" (2004), and "La Cerise" (2007), before disbanding in 2008.
The band reformed in 2016, releasing "Plates Coutures" in 2017, which addressed societal issues. They continued to produce music, releasing "Miscellanées Bissextiles" in 2023. Matmatah is celebrated for their unique blend of rock and folk influences and their enduring impact on the French music scene.
