Mario Harp Lorenzi
Mario "Harp" Lorenzi (May 29, 1894 - June 1, 1967) was a renowned harpist of the 1930s, celebrated for his versatility in styles ranging from classical to ragtime and jazz. Born in Florence, Italy, Mario was the son of Giorgio Lorenzi, a composer and harp instructor, who taught him from a young age. Mario began playing the harp at four years old and received his diploma in harp in 1908. The following year, his family relocated to London, where Mario's career flourished.

Known as "The King of Harpists," Mario was recognized as the only syncopated harpist in Europe during his early years. By the 1920s, he had achieved significant fame and was living in North London. In 1923, he married a woman with the maiden name Lachlan. His collaboration with Jay Whidden's band in 1926 marked one of the earliest instances of a harp being featured on a dance band recording. Mario also played with Fred Elizalde's band and later recorded under his own name in the 1930s, showcasing the harp's potential in dance music.

Despite his success, Mario's career was cut short due to arthritis, forcing him to retire in 1957. He passed away in Rushton, Hertfordshire, at the age of 73. Mario Lorenzi remains a significant figure in the history of jazz and swing music, particularly for his innovative use of the harp in these genres.
