Maria Basca
Maria Basca was a German soprano singer from Berlin, primarily active during the 1920s and 1930s. She studied under the tutelage of Elia Schmüeker. Basca gained significant recognition during her tour through Scandinavia in the 1920s, where she performed eleven sold-out concerts in Oslo and sang for the king and queen of Norway. Her success was noted in the press, drawing comparisons to the renowned singer Julia Culp. Beyond Scandinavia, she also performed in the Netherlands and in Batavia, Dutch East Indies. Maria Basca was the granddaughter of Turkish adjutant general Abdul Hamid. Her vocal range was notable for oscillating between soprano and mezzo-soprano, with creative ventures into tenor territory.
