Leslie Charles Bricusse, born on January 29, 1931, in Southfields, London, England, was a distinguished British composer, lyricist, and playwright. Over a career spanning nearly seven decades, Bricusse made significant contributions to both Broadway and Hollywood, crafting memorable songs and musicals. He is best known for his work on films such as "Doctor Dolittle," "Goodbye, Mr. Chips," "Scrooge," "Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory," and "Superman." His collaborations with Anthony Newley led to successful musicals like "Stop the World – I Want to Get Off" and "The Roar of the Greasepaint – The Smell of the Crowd." Bricusse's partnership with other notable composers, including John Williams and Henry Mancini, resulted in iconic songs like "Goldfinger" and "You Only Live Twice" for the James Bond films.

Bricusse's accolades include eight Ivor Novello Awards, an Oscar for Best Song in 1967 for "Talk to the Animals" from "Doctor Dolittle," and another Oscar in 1982 for the musical "Victor/Victoria," written with Mancini. His Grammy-winning song "What Kind of Fool Am I?" from "Stop the World – I Want to Get Off" remains a classic.
