Keith Reid
Keith Stuart Brian Reid (19 October 1946 – 23 March 2023) was a renowned English lyricist and songwriter, best known for his work with the band Procol Harum. Born in Welwyn Garden City, Hertfordshire, England, Reid grew up in London as the son of a Holocaust survivor. He left school early to pursue a career in songwriting.

In 1966, Reid co-founded Procol Harum with frontman Gary Brooker. Although he was not a performing member, Reid wrote the lyrics for virtually all of the band's songs, contributing to their distinctive sound. Their debut single, "A Whiter Shade of Pale," released in 1967, became a massive hit, topping the UK Singles Chart and selling over six million copies worldwide. The song was later inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 1998 and was recognized by the BBC in 2009 as the most-played song in public places in the UK over the past 75 years.

Reid's lyrical style was known for its imaginative, surreal, and multi-layered qualities, which added depth to Procol Harum's music. He continued to write for the band until their initial breakup in 1977 and later reunited with them for albums in 1991 and 2003.

Beyond Procol Harum, Reid wrote lyrics for other artists, including Michel Polnareff and John Farnham. He co-wrote Farnham's hit "You're the Voice," which became a top-selling record in Australia and a worldwide hit. In the 1980s, Reid moved to New York, where he founded a management company and continued to focus on songwriting.

In 2008, he released an album titled "The Common Thread" under The Keith Reid Project, featuring various musicians performing his songs. His second solo album, "In My Head," was released in 2018.

Keith Reid passed away on 23 March 2023 in London, England, after battling colon cancer. His contributions to music, particularly through his work with Procol Harum, left a lasting impact on the rock genre.
