Kana
Kana Miyamoto is a New York–based flutist, composer, and educator originally from Chiba, Japan. Known for her lyrical tone and unique blend of jazz, classical, and Japanese folk traditions, Kana's music often incorporates storytelling through improvisation and nature-inspired themes. She has been recognized with top honors, including the 1st prize at the National Flute Association’s Jazz Artist Competition in 2024 and the NFA Jazz Masterclass Competition in 2022. Additionally, she has received grants from Japan’s Agency for Cultural Affairs and the Queens Arts Fund.
Kana began her musical journey with the flute in junior high school and pursued advanced studies at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, and Interlochen Arts Academy. She furthered her education at Tokyo College of Music and later at The New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music in New York City, where she received a Dean’s Scholarship.
Her band, Kanacept, released its debut album "Spring Doze" in 2017, followed by a tour in Japan. Subsequent projects include "Dancer in the Galaxy" (2020) and "In the Forest ~ flute and kora field recording project~" (2021). Kana has performed at venues like The Jazz Gallery and 55 Bar, and collaborated with artists such as Frank LoCrasto and Lew Tabackin. She also teaches at the New York Jazz Workshop and Hug Music School, and is a member of the Recording Academy.
