Joachim Süß und sein Ensemble
Joachim Süß, born on December 22, 1932, in Crottendorf, Germany, is a renowned zither soloist and dialect singer. He began learning the zither at the age of ten under the tutelage of Philipp Hänel. By the age of 14, he had formed his first singing group, followed by an instrumental group two years later. In 1949, he established the Crottendorfer Heimatterzett, dedicated to preserving the musical heritage of the Erzgebirge region.
Süß became a professional musician in 1954, touring the former East Germany with bandoneon soloist Hans Friedl, the Caldarelli siblings, and the Münzberger siblings. From 1965 to 1966, he was a zither soloist with Herbert Roth's instrumental group, during which time some of his compositions were recorded for radio.
In 1972, he founded his own ensemble, Joachim Süß und sein Ensemble, with which he performed extensively and produced several albums primarily in the Erzgebirge dialect. He frequently appeared on folk music television programs alongside his ensemble and granddaughter, Therese Fiedler.
Throughout his career, Süß recorded 364 titles, participated in 115 television broadcasts, and composed 61 songs as of December 2022. He is married and has two children. His discography includes albums such as "Weihnachten is nimmer weit" (1997), "Mein Weihnachtstraum" (2000), "Weihnachtsgrüße aus dem Erzgebirge" (2008), "Mit Gesang und Zitherklang zur Weihnachtszeit" (2008), and "Bei frohem Zitherklang" (2010). In 1988, he was awarded the Medal for Services to Artistic Folk Creation in the German Democratic Republic.
