Giya Kancheli
Giya Kancheli (10 August 1935 – 2 October 2019) was a renowned Georgian composer known for his intense, haunting, and ethereal music. Born in Tbilisi, Georgia, Kancheli's work spanned over 40 years, characterized by the use of dissonance and extended techniques, particularly on the violin. He gained international recognition for his symphonies and orchestral works, as well as his contributions to film and theater music. After the Soviet Union dissolved in 1991, Kancheli moved to Berlin and later settled in Antwerp, Belgium, where he served as composer-in-residence for the Royal Flemish Philharmonic. Despite his international success, he remained deeply connected to his Georgian roots. Kancheli passed away in Tbilisi at the age of 84, leaving behind a legacy as the most popular Georgian musician. His works continue to be celebrated for their unique ability to evoke profound emotional atmospheres.
