Geraldo Pereira
Geraldo Pereira (1918-1955) was a prominent Brazilian composer and singer, renowned for his contributions to the "samba de breque" style. Born in Juiz de Fora and raised on the Mangueira hill in Rio de Janeiro, Pereira became a key figure in Brazilian samba. "Samba de breque" is characterized by its unexpected rhythmic pauses, during which the singer often delivers humorous and clever remarks. Pereira's compositions are celebrated for their witty and ironic storytelling, capturing everyday life with a unique flair.
Some of his most notable works include "Falsa Baiana," "Escurinho," "Acertei no Milhar," and "Sem Compromisso." His influence extended to many celebrated artists, with João Gilberto recording "Falsa Baiana" and other musicians like Caetano Veloso, Gilberto Gil, and Maria Bethânia acknowledging his impact on their music. Paulinho da Viola and Moreira da Silva recognized him as a pioneer of the "samba de breque" style.
