George McCrae
George Warren McCrae Jr., born on October 19, 1944, in West Palm Beach, Florida, is an American singer known for his contributions to the soul and disco genres. McCrae was the second of nine children and initially formed a singing group called the Jivin' Jets before joining the United States Navy in 1963. That same year, he married Gwen Mosley, and together they re-formed the group, eventually transitioning to a duo act under Henry Stone's Alston label.
In 1974, McCrae's career took a significant turn when he recorded the song "Rock Your Baby," written by Richard Finch and Harry Wayne Casey of KC and the Sunshine Band. The song became a massive hit, selling an estimated eleven million copies worldwide and topping charts in the U.S. and the UK. It was recognized by Rolling Stone magazine as the No. 1 song of the year, and McCrae received a Grammy nomination for Best Male R&B Vocalist.
Following the success of "Rock Your Baby," McCrae released other singles such as "I Can't Leave You Alone" and "It's Been So Long," which also charted in the UK. He recorded several albums, including George McCrae (1975) and Diamond Touch (1976), and continued to work with his wife Gwen until their divorce in 1976. They had two daughters, Sophia and Leah.
As the disco era waned, McCrae's commercial success diminished, though he continued to release albums like We Did It! and another self-titled album in 1978. He later remarried, moved to Canada, and entered a period of semi-retirement.
