Emmett Berry
Emmett Berry (July 23, 1915 – June 22, 1993) was a prominent American jazz trumpeter born in Macon, Georgia. Initially trained in classical trumpet, Berry transitioned to jazz by the age of 18 and moved to New York City. He became a member of Fletcher Henderson's band, eventually replacing Roy Eldridge as the soloist. In the 1940s, Berry worked in Eldridge's Little Jazz Trumpet Ensemble and also played with Count Basie's band. He was a noted accompanist for Billie Holiday and appeared in the iconic photograph "A Great Day in Harlem" as well as in the television special "The Sound of Jazz." Throughout his career, Berry collaborated with numerous jazz legends and contributed to a variety of recordings. He passed away in Cleveland, Ohio, in 1993.
