Dave Franklin
Dave Franklin (September 28, 1895 – February 2, 1970) was a prominent American songwriter and pianist, renowned for his contributions to Tin Pan Alley. Born in New York City, Franklin began his musical career early, leaving school at the age of 13 to work as a pianist in a publishing house. He gained recognition for co-writing "The Merry-Go-Round Broke Down" with lyricist Cliff Friend, a song that became the iconic theme for the Looney Tunes cartoon series. Over his career, Franklin collaborated with several notable lyricists, including Al Dubin, Isham Jones, and Irving Taylor.
Franklin's work extended beyond songwriting; he was an accomplished pianist who performed in vaudeville and nightclubs across the United States and Europe. In 1934, he joined the American Society of Composers, Authors, and Publishers (ASCAP) and began writing songs for big bands and Warner Brothers cartoons. Some of his well-known compositions include "You Can't Stop Me from Dreaming," "Anniversary Waltz," "When My Dreamboat Comes Home," and "Floating on a Bubble." His songs were recorded by artists such as Glen Gray, Isham Jones, Guy Lombardo, and Frankie Trumbauer. Franklin passed away in Los Angeles, California, at the age of 74.
