Danny Healy
Danny Healy is an accomplished Australian saxophonist and multi-woodwind instrumentalist known for his contributions to the jazz music scene. Over the past decade, Healy has honed his craft through formal studies in performance and composition, drawing inspiration from a diverse range of musical influences, including jazz legends like Dexter Gordon and classical composers such as Stravinsky. His dedication to his art is evident in his rigorous practice regimen and his deep appreciation for jazz styles from the 1920s to the 1950s.
Healy's career has been marked by a dynamic international presence, having lived and performed in various countries, including China, Vietnam, Eastern Europe, and Central Asia. His time in Shanghai saw him become a fixture in the local music scene, performing at renowned venues like Club JZ and CJW. In the UK, he was part of the Birmingham Jazz scene before returning to Australia, where he continued to perform in Melbourne and later Hobart.
In Hobart, Healy has been involved in several projects, including performances at the Mona Foma (MOFO) Festival. His innovative project 'Duke Deconstructed' was commissioned for a synaesthesia event at MONA and remains an evolving work. He also paid tribute to Sonny Rollins through performances under and on bridges around Hobart.
In 2013, Healy toured and recorded with the Tom Vincent Quartet and released both a trio album and a live recording of 'Duke Deconstructed.' He also toured with The Violent Femmes. More recently, Healy served as Composer and Performer-in-residence at MONA, where he compiled and performed over 700 compositions for his BY HAND Project in 2022.
Healy's recent ventures include living and performing in Japan from 2024 to 2025, where he toured 15 cities, collaborating with local musicians. His work continues to focus on jazz, with recent album releases such as "In A Day’s Work" by Danny Healy Swing 4.
