Claude Barzotti
Claude Barzotti, born Francesco Barzotti on July 23, 1953, in Châtelineau, Belgium, was a Belgian singer of Italian origin celebrated for his contributions to the French pop music scene, particularly in the 1980s. Raised in Italy near Pesaro, Barzotti returned to Belgium at the age of 18 and settled in Court-Saint-Étienne. His musical journey began in earnest in 1981 with the release of the song "Madame," which sold 400,000 copies. However, it was his 1983 hit "Le Rital" that cemented his status as a household name. The song, reflecting on his Italian heritage and the challenges of identity, became a defining piece of his career.
Barzotti's music resonated not only in France but also in Francophone Canada, with popular tracks like "Je ne t'écrirai plus" and "Prends bien soin d'elle." He continued to release music throughout the 1980s, with "Aime-moi" in 1990 marking his last major hit. Despite a decline in mainstream success in later years, Barzotti remained a beloved figure, known for his distinctive voice and emotive performances.
In addition to his music, Barzotti contributed to the Belgian entry for the 1992 Eurovision Song Contest and released a charitable single, "Jada," in 2007 to support education for children in impoverished countries. He released a total of 20 albums, with his music featuring in several French films.
Barzotti retired from music in December 2020 due to health issues and passed away from pancreatic cancer on June 24, 2023, in Court-Saint-Étienne, Belgium, at the age of 69. He is remembered for his heartfelt songs and his significant impact on the music of his era.
