Burton Lane
Burton Lane, born Burton Levy on February 2, 1912, in New York City, was a distinguished American composer known for his contributions to both Broadway and Hollywood. Lane's career in music began early; he was composing songs for theatrical producers like the Shuberts as a teenager. He dropped out of high school to pursue music full-time, becoming a song plugger in the vibrant environment of Tin Pan Alley.

Lane's work in Hollywood was extensive, contributing music to over 60 films. He was particularly noted for discovering Judy Garland at the age of 13, arranging her audition with MGM, which launched her illustrious career. His early Hollywood successes included the hit song "Everything I Have Is Yours" from the film "Dancing Lady" (1933).

In Broadway, Lane is best remembered for his musicals "Finian's Rainbow" (1947) and "On a Clear Day You Can See Forever" (1965), the latter of which was adapted into a film starring Barbra Streisand. His collaboration with lyricists like E.Y. Harburg and Alan Jay Lerner yielded classics such as "Old Devil Moon" and "How Are Things in Glocca Morra?".

Lane's influence extended beyond composition; he served as president of The American Guild of Authors and Composers and was inducted into the Songwriters' Hall of Fame in 1971. He passed away on January 5, 1997, in New York City, leaving behind a legacy of timeless music that continues to resonate in American culture.
