Brewer & Shipley were an American folk rock duo formed by singer-songwriters Mike Brewer and Tom Shipley. Originating in the United States, they were active primarily from 1967 to 1978, with reunions in 1989 and from 1993 to 2021. Known for their intricate guitar work, vocal harmonies, and socially conscious lyrics, Brewer & Shipley captured the spirit of their generation, addressing themes such as the Vietnam War and personal and political freedom.

The duo first met on the coffeehouse circuit and later moved to Los Angeles in 1968 to write music together. Their initial albums, "Down in L.A." and "Weeds," were followed by their most successful album, "Tarkio," in 1970. This album featured their biggest hit, "One Toke Over the Line," which became a Top Ten hit despite radio bans due to its marijuana-themed lyrics. The song gained unexpected attention when performed on The Lawrence Welk Show, where it was humorously introduced as a gospel song.

Brewer & Shipley performed with notable acts such as Stephen Stills, Bruce Springsteen, and Jerry Garcia, who contributed pedal steel guitar to their song "Oh, Mommy." After disbanding in 1979, they reunited for a concert in 1989 and released the albums "Shanghai" (1993) and "Heartland" (1997). They continued to tour occasionally in the Midwest.

Mike Brewer passed away on December 17, 2024, at the age of 80. Tom Shipley resides in Rolla, Missouri, where he works at the Missouri University of Science & Technology.
