Bobby Vee
Bobby Vee, born Robert Thomas Velline on April 30, 1943, in Fargo, North Dakota, emerged from a musical family. His father, Sidney, played violin and piano, while his uncle and brothers were also musically inclined. Bobby initially played saxophone in his high school band but was drawn to rock music. He and his brother Bill, along with friends Jim Stillman and Bob Korum, formed a band called the Shadows.
Bobby's career took a significant turn on February 3, 1959, following the tragic plane crash that killed Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens, and The Big Bopper. The Shadows filled in for Holly at a concert in Moorhead, Minnesota, marking Bobby's debut. This opportunity led to a successful career, with Bobby Vee achieving thirty-eight Top 100 hits, including seven gold records, and appearing in four films. He signed with Liberty Records in 1959, and his first hit, "Susie Baby," reached number one on local charts. Bobby Vee's career spanned over 50 years, making him a beloved figure in the music industry.
