Betty Lynn, born Elizabeth Ann Theresa Lynn on August 29, 1926, in Kansas City, Missouri, was an American actress renowned for her role as Thelma Lou on "The Andy Griffith Show." Raised in a musical environment by her mezzo-soprano mother, she began her career in entertainment at a young age, performing in supper clubs and on Broadway. Her early life was marked by a tumultuous family situation, leading her to be raised by her maternal grandparents.

At 18, Lynn joined a USO tour in the China Burma India Theater during World War II, where she entertained and consoled wounded servicemen. Her acting career began in radio and transitioned to Broadway, where she was discovered by Darryl F. Zanuck and signed to 20th Century Fox. She appeared in films such as "Sitting Pretty" (1948), "June Bride" (1948), and "Cheaper by the Dozen" (1950).

Lynn's television career flourished in the 1950s and 1960s, with her most memorable role being Thelma Lou, Deputy Barney Fife's girlfriend on "The Andy Griffith Show," a character beloved by fans. She continued to appear on television in various roles, including guest appearances on "Little House on the Prairie" and "Matlock."

In her later years, Betty Lynn moved to Mount Airy, North Carolina, the inspiration for the fictional town of Mayberry. She lived there until her passing on October 16, 2021, at the age of 95. Her legacy endures through her iconic portrayal of Thelma Lou and her contributions to American television and film.
