Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra
The Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra, known in German as the Berliner Philharmoniker, is a prestigious and internationally acclaimed symphony orchestra based in Berlin, Germany. It was founded in 1882 by 54 musicians who left the Bilsesche Kapelle, led by Benjamin Bilse, to form their own ensemble. The orchestra quickly gained an international reputation under the leadership of Hans von Bülow, who served as its principal conductor from 1887 to 1892.

Throughout its history, the Berlin Philharmonic has been led by several renowned conductors, including Arthur Nikisch (1895–1922), Wilhelm Furtwängler (1922–45; 1952–54), Herbert von Karajan (1955–89), Claudio Abbado (1989–2002), and Sir Simon Rattle (2002–18). Since 2019, Kirill Petrenko has held the position of principal conductor.

The orchestra is celebrated for its performances of Classical, Romantic, and early 20th-century music and has an extensive repertoire that includes works from outside the Austro-German tradition. It has made numerous recordings, particularly during the Karajan era, when it became known for its innovative use of recording technologies and collaborations with the Deutsche Grammophon label.

The Berlin Philharmonic's home is the Berliner Philharmonie, and it has continued to evolve in the 21st century by launching its own Digital Concert Hall in 2009 and establishing its label, Berliner Philharmoniker Recordings, in 2014. The orchestra also collaborates annually with a select artist-in-residence and composer-in-residence, maintaining its status as a leading force in the world of classical music.
