Aureliano Pertile
Aureliano Pertile (9 November 1885 – 11 January 1952) was an Italian lyric-dramatic tenor renowned for his unmatched technique and emotional depth. Born in Montagnana, Italy, he studied singing under Vittorio Orefice in Padua and Gaetano Bavagnoli in Milan. Pertile made his operatic debut in 1911 as Lyonel in "Martha" in Vicenza. He gained prominence after performing at La Scala in Milan in 1916 and made his American debut at the Metropolitan Opera in 1921. Pertile became a leading tenor at La Scala from 1927 to 1937, favored by conductor Arturo Toscanini. His repertoire included roles in "Lohengrin," "Lucia di Lammermoor," "La traviata," and "Aida," among others. Despite criticisms of his voice, which some described as "brutta" (ugly), his performances were noted for their dramatic intensity. Pertile also sang at the Royal Opera House in London and the Teatro Colón in Buenos Aires. After retiring in 1946, he taught at the Milan Conservatory until his death in 1952. His recordings, made between 1922 and 1942, continue to be celebrated.
