Amadito Valdés
Amadito Valdés, born Amado Valdés on February 14, 1946, in Havana, Cuba, is a renowned Cuban percussionist and timbalero. He is celebrated for his contributions to Afro-Cuban jazz, son cubano, Cuban charanga, and salsa music. Valdés began his musical education under the guidance of his father, Amadito Valdés Sr., a notable Cuban jazz saxophonist, and further honed his drumming skills with Walfredo de los Reyes. He completed his formal education at the "Alejandro García Caturla" Conservatory in Havana, where he developed a distinctive improvisational style on the timbales.

In the 1960s, Valdés became the timbalero for the acclaimed Cuban vocal quartet Las d'Aida, marking the start of a significant phase in his career. He gained international recognition in 1996 when he collaborated with American guitarist Ry Cooder on the Buena Vista Social Club project, contributing to both the albums and performances, and appearing in the 1999 documentary film of the same name. His work with the Buena Vista Social Club brought him global acclaim and highlighted his mastery of Afro-Cuban rhythms.

Throughout his career, Valdés has performed with various prestigious groups, including the Afro-Cuban All Stars and the orchestra accompanying the show Rosita Fornés Tridimensional. He has also participated in numerous international tours and festivals, showcasing his talent across Europe and beyond.

In addition to his performance career, Valdés has dedicated himself to education, imparting his knowledge to new generations of Cuban musicians. His contributions to the music world have earned him the nickname "Las baquetas doradas del Buena Vista Social Club" (The Golden Sticks of the Buena Vista Social Club).
