Domenico Scarlatti
Domenico Scarlatti, born Giuseppe Domenico Scarlatti on October 26, 1685, in Naples, Kingdom of Naples, was an Italian composer known for his significant contributions to keyboard music. He was the sixth of ten children of the renowned composer Alessandro Scarlatti. Domenico was a contemporary of Johann Sebastian Bach and George Frideric Handel, sharing the same birth year.

Scarlatti began his musical education under his father's guidance and later studied with prominent composers such as Gaetano Greco, Francesco Gasparini, and Bernardo Pasquini. At the age of 15, he secured a position as an organist at the Chapel Royal of Naples. His early career included revising operas and composing for the exiled Polish queen Marie Casimire in Rome, where he met Handel. A notable event in his life was a harpsichord contest with Handel, where Scarlatti was considered superior.

In 1719, Scarlatti moved to Lisbon to teach music to the Portuguese princess Maria Magdalena Barbara. He followed her to Spain when she became Queen, spending the rest of his life in service to the Spanish royal family. Scarlatti is best known for his 555 keyboard sonatas, which expanded the technical and musical possibilities of the harpsichord and influenced the development of the Classical style. His works often incorporated elements of Spanish and Portuguese folk music.

Domenico Scarlatti passed away on July 23, 1757, in Madrid, Spain. His music, particularly his keyboard sonatas, continues to be celebrated for its innovation and influence.
