Doug Sahm
Douglas Wayne Sahm, born on November 6, 1941, in San Antonio, Texas, was a prodigious musician who played a pivotal role in the development of Tex-Mex music. A child prodigy, Sahm began performing at a young age, making his radio debut at five and becoming a featured player on the Louisiana Hayride by age eight. Despite being offered a spot on the Grand Ole Opry, his mother insisted he finish school.

Sahm's early exposure to a variety of musical styles, including blues, rock, country, and conjunto, shaped his eclectic sound. He was deeply influenced by the vibrant musical scene of his predominantly African American neighborhood, where he listened to artists like T-Bone Walker and Howlin' Wolf.

In 1965, Sahm formed the Sir Douglas Quintet, which achieved international success with the hit "She's About a Mover." The band was known for its unique blend of rock and Tex-Mex sounds. In the 1980s, Sahm co-founded the Texas Tornados with Augie Meyers, Freddy Fender, and Flaco Jiménez, further cementing his influence in the Tex-Mex genre.

Despite a career marked by fluctuating commercial success, Sahm maintained a loyal following and was highly respected by his peers. He continued to tour and record until his death on November 18, 1999, in Taos, New Mexico. Sahm's legacy endures as a pioneering figure who bridged diverse musical traditions.
