Carl Marshall
Carl Marshall is a prominent figure in the Southern Soul music scene, known for his contributions as a singer, songwriter, and producer. Born in Independence, Louisiana, Marshall's musical journey began in the vibrant streets of New Orleans, where he played guitar in the band Sam & the Soul Machine. Throughout his career, he has worked alongside notable musicians such as Aaron Neville and Cyril Neville.
Marshall's first recording was released in 1976 under the name Soul Dog, featuring the proto-rap song "Soul Dog." He continued to release music under various labels, including a second LP in 1980 credited to Carl Marshall & The S.D.’s. In the early 1990s, he founded his own label, Gifft, and began producing a wide range of music, from Funk and R&B to Blues and Gospel.
One of his most significant achievements came with the release of "Good Lovin’ Will Make You Cry" in 2005. Initially overlooked, the song eventually became a staple in Southern Soul, gaining widespread popularity and recognition. Marshall's work has been celebrated for its funky grooves and soulful melodies, with "Good Lovin’" being described as having a country influence.
