Moogy Klingman
Mark "Moogy" Klingman (September 7, 1950 – November 15, 2011) was an influential American musician, songwriter, and record producer, known for his contributions to the rock genre. Born in Great Neck, New York, Klingman began his musical journey at a young age, playing DJ and collecting records. By 16, he joined Jimmy James and the Blue Flames with Jimi Hendrix. His early career included forming the band Glitterhouse and working with producer Bob Crewe on the soundtrack for the film Barbarella.
Klingman was a founding member of Todd Rundgren's band, Utopia, and played a significant role in the construction of the Secret Sound recording studio in Manhattan, where Rundgren produced several albums. He played keyboards on ten Rundgren solo albums and several Utopia albums. His collaboration with Bette Midler was notable, serving as her bandleader and co-composing her signature song "(You Gotta Have) Friends."
Throughout his career, Klingman worked with a variety of artists, including Lou Reed, for whom he assembled a backing band mid-tour in 1972. His songs were covered by artists like Johnny Winter, Carly Simon, and Eric Clapton, showcasing his wide-ranging influence. Klingman passed away in New York City, leaving behind a legacy of musical innovation and collaboration.
