E. Johnson
Herman E. Johnson (August 18, 1909 – February 2, 1975) was an American country blues guitarist from Zachary, Louisiana. Born into a religious family, Johnson was influenced by his Baptist upbringing and the music of Texas blues musician Blind Lemon Jefferson. He learned to play guitar in 1927 while working various jobs. Johnson was recorded by folklorist Harry Oster in 1961 in Baton Rouge, and his music, including the notable "Depression Blues," was preserved in the Library of Congress. After a stroke in 1970, he retired from performing and passed away in 1975. His recordings were released on the album "Louisiana Country Blues" by Arhoolie Records.
