Cecil Macklin
Cecil Macklin (1883-1944) was an English composer and arranger known for his contributions to dance music, particularly for military bands. Born in England, Macklin gained recognition for his composition "Très Moutarde" (1911), also known as "Too Much Mustard." This lively tune, originally a march, became popular in the United States, where it was adapted by ragtime bands and featured in performances by notable figures such as James Reese Europe and the dancing duo Vernon and Irene Castle. Despite the success of "Très Moutarde," Macklin's other compositions, including "Tango is the Dance for Me" and "That Whistling Rag," did not achieve the same level of acclaim. After 1916, Macklin focused primarily on arrangements, with a final original piece, "Bébé Blue Eyes," appearing in 1923. His work, especially "Très Moutarde," continued to be performed and recorded by various artists over the years. Macklin passed away in 1944.
