Joe Venuti & Eddie Lang
Joe Venuti and Eddie Lang were pioneering figures in the Jazz Age, hailing from South Philadelphia's Italian neighborhood. Venuti, born in 1903, and Lang, originally named Salvatore Massaro and born in 1902, became friends in their early teens. They were drawn together by their shared classical training in solfege and violin and their mutual fascination with the emerging jazz sounds following World War I. Their innovative blend of opera, classical, and Italian music with popular music led to groundbreaking recordings between 1926 and 1933, establishing them as key figures in the development of chamber jazz.

Their partnership was marked by a unique dynamic: Venuti's commanding presence and humor contrasted with Lang's quiet demeanor. Despite these differences, they shared interests in sports, gambling, and fishing, which complemented their musical collaboration. They were part of an elite group of musicians known as "The Class of '24," who were instrumental in bringing swing to jazz improvisation.

Venuti was known for his virtuosic violin technique, characterized by a powerful, swinging style and trumpet-like phrasing, while Lang was celebrated for his dexterity and originality on the guitar. Together, they left an indelible mark on the jazz genre, influencing countless musicians and shaping the sound of their era.
