Donnie Elbert
Donnie Elbert (May 25, 1936 – January 26, 1989) was an American soul singer and songwriter known for his powerful falsetto voice. Born in New Orleans, Louisiana, Elbert moved with his family to Buffalo, New York, at the age of three. He began his musical journey by learning guitar and piano as a child and formed a doo-wop group called the Vibraharps in 1955. After leaving the group in 1957, he embarked on a solo career, achieving success with his debut single "What Can I Do?" which reached No. 12 on the U.S. R&B chart.

Elbert's career saw him perform at iconic venues like New York's Apollo Theater and tour the Chitlin' Circuit. Despite some regional hits, he faced challenges in achieving consistent commercial success in the U.S. However, his song "A Little Piece of Leather" became a Northern soul favorite in the UK, reaching No. 27 on the pop charts there in 1972. Elbert relocated to the UK in 1966, where he recorded several tracks, including a cover of the Supremes' "Where Did Our Love Go?" and an album of Otis Redding covers.

Returning to the U.S., Elbert experienced a resurgence in popularity with the hit "Can't Get Over Losing You" and his successful remake of "Where Did Our Love Go?" which became his biggest hit, reaching No. 15 on the Billboard pop chart and No. 8 in the UK in 1972. Despite his later struggles with record labels, Elbert's influence remained significant, especially within the Northern soul scene. He passed away in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, in 1989.
