Robert Katscher
Robert Katscher was an Austrian composer and lyricist born on May 20, 1894, in Vienna, Austria-Hungary (now Austria). Initially pursuing a career in law, he later shifted his focus to music, studying at the Academy of Music and Performing Arts under Hans Gál. Katscher became one of Austria's most popular composers of entertainment music before 1938, known for his Wienerlieder, dance music, schlager, and operettas. His notable works include "Wenn die Elisabeth nicht so schöne Beine hätt" and the musical comedy "Die Wunder-Bar," which was adapted into a Broadway play and a 1934 film starring Al Jolson.

As a Jewish artist, Katscher fled Austria in 1938 due to the rise of the Nazi regime, emigrating to the United States. He became the first refugee to be accepted as a member of ASCAP. Katscher settled in Hollywood around 1940, where he contributed to film soundtracks, though many of his works remained uncredited. His piece "When Day Is Done," interpreted by Paul Whiteman in 1927, continued to be used in film soundtracks after his death. Robert Katscher passed away on February 23, 1942, in Hollywood, California.
