Toots Camarata
Salvador "Toots" Camarata, born on May 11, 1913, in Glen Ridge, New Jersey, was a renowned American composer, arranger, trumpeter, and record producer. He studied music at the prestigious Juilliard School in New York. Camarata began his career as a trumpet player with prominent bands such as those led by Jimmy and Tommy Dorsey and Benny Goodman. He became the lead trumpet and arranger for Jimmy Dorsey, arranging hits like "Tangerine" and "Green Eyes." His arranging talents extended to work with celebrated artists including Louis Armstrong, Bing Crosby, Billie Holiday, and Ella Fitzgerald.
In 1944, Camarata co-founded London Records with Sir Edward Lewis, aiming to distribute classical music from the U.K. in the U.S. He orchestrated and conducted classical albums featuring works by composers like Puccini and Tchaikovsky. Camarata joined ASCAP in 1948 and composed numerous popular songs and instrumentals.
In 1956, Walt Disney hired Camarata to establish Disneyland Records, where he served as music director and producer, producing over 300 albums during his tenure. He founded Sunset Sound Recorders in 1958, which became a significant recording studio in Hollywood.
Camarata also worked in radio and television, serving as a musical arranger for the Jean Sablon Show and as a conductor for TV series such as "Startime." He passed away on April 13, 2005, in Burbank, California, leaving behind a legacy as a pioneering figure in the music industry.
