Archie Campbell
Archie Campbell was a prominent country comedian born on November 7, 1914, in Bulls Gap, Tennessee, and passed away on August 29, 1987, in Knoxville, Tennessee. He is best remembered for his role on the long-running television show "Hee Haw," where he joined as a writer-comedian in 1969. Campbell's early career success began at Knoxville radio station WNOX, where he developed his popular “Grandpappy” character. He joined the Grand Ole Opry in 1958, performing on the Prince Albert Show, a segment sponsored by the R. J. Reynolds Tobacco Company.

Campbell's recording career included work with RCA and Starday record labels. He signed with RCA Victor in 1959 and achieved a Top 25 hit in 1960 with "Trouble in the Amen Corner." Although subsequent singles did not achieve the same success, he continued to record, releasing several comedy/music albums such as "Bull Session at Bull's Creek" with Junior Samples and a self-titled album for Elektra in 1976. In addition to his music career, Campbell hosted the TNN interview show "Yesteryear" in 1984.

Before his television fame, Campbell's career included a stint at WDOD-Chattanooga from 1937 to 1941, service in the Navy during World War II, and a return to WNOX, where he launched the TV show "Country Playhouse" in 1952, which ran for six years. His work laid a foundation for his later success in the country comedy genre, contributing to the growth and popularity of country music.
