Mack Rice
Mack Rice, born Bonny Rice on November 10, 1933, in Clarksdale, Mississippi, was a notable American songwriter and singer, often credited as Sir Mack Rice. He passed away on June 27, 2016, in Detroit, Michigan. Rice's family relocated to Detroit in 1950, where he began his career in the R&B music scene. He performed with the Five Scalders in 1956 and later joined the Falcons from 1957 to 1963, a group that included future stars like Eddie Floyd and Wilson Pickett.

Rice's most famous work as a songwriter includes the classic hit "Mustang Sally," which he originally recorded in 1965, reaching number 15 on the Billboard R&B chart. The song became even more popular when covered by Wilson Pickett in 1966. Another significant composition by Rice is "Respect Yourself," co-written with Luther Ingram, which became a hit for the Staple Singers.

Throughout his career, Rice's songwriting prowess was recognized by many artists who performed his songs, including Ike and Tina Turner, Albert King, Joe Cocker, and Buddy Guy, among others. His contributions to music extended across both Motown and Stax Records, making him one of the few musicians to have worked with both iconic labels. As a solo artist, Rice also had a chart hit with "Coal Man" in 1969.
