Alexey Popov
Alexey Popov, born on September 8, 1970, in Leningrad (now St. Petersburg), Russia, is a prominent Russian musician, saxophonist, composer, and arranger. He is recognized as one of the leading jazz saxophonists in Russia and is the leader of several bands, including Doo-Bop Sound, Lera Gehner Band, SPb Funk Alliance, Four & More, and the Alexey Popov Quartet.

Popov's musical journey began at the Children's Musical School, where he studied clarinet, and he later graduated from the Leningrad Music School named after Mussorgsky in saxophone under Master G. L. Holstein in 1993. He gained early experience working with the New Band on the American cruise liner Commodore Hotel in St. Petersburg. His career in jazz took off in 1994 when he began playing with various bands in St. Petersburg.

In 1995, he co-founded the acid jazz band Flip Fantasia, and in 1997, he organized the acid funk band Doo-Bop Sound, which achieved international acclaim by winning the 42nd Montreux Jazz Festival in 2008. Throughout his career, Popov has toured extensively across Russia and Europe, performing at jazz festivals in Norway, Sweden, Finland, Germany, and Switzerland.

Popov has been involved in numerous projects, including the creation of the Lera Gehner Band in 2002, the mainstream jazz project Four & More in 2003, and collaborations with notable musicians like D. Kramer and Ronnie Barrasch. He has also contributed to symphonic jazz projects and toured with various international acts.

In addition to his performance career, Popov has been an educator, teaching saxophone at the St. Petersburg University of Culture and Arts from 2005 to 2019. His discography includes several albums with Doo-Bop Sound and other collaborative projects, showcasing his talent as a composer and arranger.
