Buddy Brock
Buddy Brock, born William Calhoun Brock Jr. in 1952 or 1953 in Greenwood, South Carolina, was a prominent American country music songwriter. He passed away on January 24, 2025, in Mount Juliet, Tennessee, at the age of 72. Brock was renowned for his contributions to the country music genre, particularly during his active years from 1974 to 2017.
Brock's songwriting prowess led to a number of significant hits. He co-wrote "Watermelon Crawl" with Zack Turner, which reached #4 on the Billboard Hot Country Songs chart and also made the Billboard Hot 100 as a dance remix. His collaboration with Aaron Tippin resulted in the song "There Ain't Nothin' Wrong with the Radio," which topped the country chart for three weeks in 1992. Other notable works include "I Wanna Fall in Love" for Lila McCann, "You've Got to Stand for Something," "Haunted Heart" for Sammy Kershaw, and "I Wonder How Far It Is Over You."
Brock moved to Nashville, Tennessee, in 1990 to further his songwriting career and spent 17 years as a staff writer for Acuff-Rose/Sony Publishing. Throughout his career, his songs were recorded by a wide array of artists, including George Jones, Ty Herndon, Doug Stone, Gary Allan, Woody Lee, George Strait, Charley Pride, and Daryle Singletary. He was recognized with BMI Awards for several of his hits.
In 2007, Brock signed with Music Central Publishing and concluded his career with Ray Batson Music. He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Robyn Alexander Brock, their children Rebecca Dawn McKinney and Caleb Reid Brock, four grandchildren, and his brother Roger “Rody” Brock. A service in his memory was held at Mt Juliet First Baptist Church.
