Samo Hubad
Samo Hubad (1917–2016) was a prominent Slovenian conductor and composer. He had a distinguished career leading numerous orchestras across Europe and internationally, influencing multiple generations of musicians.
Career highlights
Early work: After graduating in composition and conducting from the Ljubljana Academy of Music in 1941, Hubad worked as a conductor and choir leader at the Ljubljana Opera from 1942. During his youth, he also played piano and double bass for jazz and popular music ensembles.
Leadership roles: Hubad held several major posts during his career:
Director of the Ljubljana Opera: 1948–1952.
Chief conductor of the Slovenian Philharmonic Orchestra: 1947–1966.
Chief conductor of the Zagreb Philharmonic Orchestra: 1955–1957.
Chief conductor of the RTV Slovenia Symphony Orchestra: He was later given the title of honorary conductor for this orchestra in 2005.
International recognition: His career included guest conducting engagements with over 60 orchestras worldwide, including the Munich, Budapest, Warsaw, and Leningrad Philharmonics. He also conducted at major festivals, such as the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino in Italy.
Mentorship: Through his work at the Ljubljana Opera, Hubad was instrumental in the artistic development of many of Slovenia's leading operatic soloists.
Family and legacy
Musical family: Hubad was the son of Matej Hubad, a well-known conductor and a co-founder of the Glasbena Matica music society in Ljubljana, which was a significant influence on Samo's musical education.
Honors: His contributions to Slovenian music were recognized with multiple honors, including the Prešeren Award in 1958 and the Silver Honorary Sign of Freedom of the Republic of Slovenia in 2002.
Death: Samo Hubad died in Skaručna, Slovenia, on August 31, 2016, at the age of 99.
