Eugenia Moldoveanu
Eugenia Moldoveanu, born on March 19, 1944, in Bușteni, Romania, is a renowned Romanian operatic soprano. She spent her childhood in Azuga and began studying piano at the age of seven with Aurel Bobescu. Between 1963 and 1968, Moldoveanu studied singing at the Conservatory of Music "Ciprian Porumbescu" in Bucharest under Arta Florescu and opera with Hero Lupescu. Her career took off when she won first prize at the Sofia competition in 1968 with Giuseppe Verdi's "Traviata," leading to her engagement with the National Opera in Bucharest, where she debuted as Donna Anna in Mozart's "Don Giovanni."

Moldoveanu's talent was further recognized in 1970 when she won first prizes at the "G. Enescu" International Competitions in Bucharest and Toulouse, France. In 1973, she received the grand prize at the Madama Butterfly competition in Tokyo, awarded by Maria Callas, the jury president. This marked the beginning of a distinguished international career, performing at prestigious venues such as the Metropolitan Opera in New York, La Scala in Milan, the Hamburg Opera, Covent Garden in London, the Arena in Verona, Teatro Colon in Buenos Aires, and the Vienna State Opera.

Throughout her career, Moldoveanu performed alongside celebrated artists like Placido Domingo, Jose Carreras, Carlo Bergonzi, Alfredo Kraus, Renato Bruson, Giuseppe Taddei, Ruggero Raimondi, Katia Ricciarelli, and Nicolai Ghiaurov, under the direction of renowned conductors such as Riccardo Muti, Claudio Abbado, Giuseppe Patanè, Georges Prêtre, and Wolfgang Sawallisch. Her extensive repertoire included operas like "Don Giovanni," "Idomeneo," "The Magic Flute," "The Marriage of Figaro," "Traviata," "Luisa Miller," "Simon Boccanegra," "Ernani," "Otello," "La Bohème," "Madama Butterfly," "Turandot," "Gianni Schicchi," "Manon Lescaut," "Der Freischütz," "Carmen," "Manon," "Năpasta," and "Oedipus." She also performed in vocal-symphonic works such as Beethoven's Ninth Symphony, Verdi's Requiem, Brahms, Mozart, Dvorak's "Stabat Mater," and Beethoven's "Missa Solemnis."

Moldoveanu retired from the stage at 49 and later taught singing at the National University of Music in Bucharest. Her contributions extended beyond performance; she served as Secretary of State at the Ministry of Culture (1994-1996), General Director of the Romanian Opera (1993-1995), and was a parliamentarian for the PDSR (1996-2001) and PSD (2001-2004). She was also Vice-President of the Permanent Delegation of BEx. Central to the PDSR.

Her recordings include "Madama Butterfly" (1979) and "La Bohème" (1982), both released by Electrecord, and a collection of opera arias in 2000. Moldoveanu has been honored with awards such as the Order of "Cultural Merit" and the national Order "Star of Romania."
