Lotte Schöne
Lotte Schöne, née Charlotte Bodenstein (December 15, 1891 – December 22, 1977), was an Austrian lyric coloratura soprano renowned for her performances in the works of Mozart and Richard Strauss. Born in Vienna, she studied music in her hometown and debuted in 1912 at the Vienna Volksoper. Schöne was a prominent figure at the Vienna State Opera from 1917 to 1925, performing major light lyric roles. Her career extended to the Salzburg Festival from 1922 to 1934, where she sang roles such as Zerlina, Blonde, and Despina. She also performed at the Berlin State Opera between 1925 and 1933, taking on roles like Manon, Mimi, and Cio-Cio-San. In 1927, she created the role of Liù in London at the Royal Opera House.
With the rise of the Nazi Party, Schöne, who was of Jewish descent, relocated to Paris and joined the Opéra-Comique, where she was particularly noted for her portrayal of Mélisande. Her career was interrupted during the German occupation of France in World War II, forcing her into hiding. After the war, she resumed her career, primarily in concert performances, until her retirement in 1953. Schöne then dedicated herself to teaching voice in Paris. She passed away in Bobigny, leaving behind a legacy of recordings that continue to be appreciated by opera enthusiasts.
