Kirov State Academic Theatre of Opera and Ballet
The Kirov State Academic Theatre of Opera and Ballet, known today as the Mariinsky Theatre, is a historic opera house located in Saint Petersburg, Russia. Opened on October 2, 1860, it quickly became a leading cultural institution in late 19th-century Russia, premiering significant works by composers such as Tchaikovsky, Mussorgsky, and Rimsky-Korsakov. Originally named the Imperial Mariinsky Theatre after Empress Maria Alexandrovna, the theatre underwent several name changes reflecting the political climate of the times. From 1935 to 1992, during the Soviet era, it was known as the Kirov State Academic Theatre of Opera and Ballet, commemorating the assassinated Leningrad Communist Party leader Sergey Kirov. The theatre is home to the renowned Mariinsky Ballet, Opera, and Orchestra. Since 1988, Valery Gergiev has served as its general director, continuing its legacy as a premier venue for opera and ballet.
