Renaldo „Obie“ Benson
Renaldo "Obie" Benson (June 14, 1936 – July 1, 2005) was an influential American soul and R&B singer and songwriter, best known as a founding member and the bass singer of the Motown group the Four Tops. Born in Detroit, Michigan, Benson attended Northern High School, where he met Lawrence Payton. Together, they formed The Four Aims with Levi Stubbs and Abdul "Duke" Fakir, later becoming The Four Tops to avoid confusion with another group.

Benson was instrumental in the choreography of the group and contributed significantly to their sound and success. The Four Tops signed with Motown in 1963, where they collaborated with the songwriting team Holland-Dozier-Holland to produce numerous hits, including "I Can't Help Myself (Sugar Pie, Honey Bunch)" and "Reach Out I'll Be There." The group remained popular through the decades, adapting their style and continuing to perform even as musical trends changed.

Aside from his work with the Four Tops, Benson co-wrote the iconic protest song "What's Going On" with Al Cleveland, which Marvin Gaye recorded. The song became a major hit and was ranked No. 4 on Rolling Stone's list of the 500 Greatest Songs of All Time in 2004.

Benson continued to perform with the Four Tops until April 2005, shortly before his death from lung cancer on July 1, 2005. His legacy endures through his contributions to music and the lasting impact of his work with the Four Tops and Marvin Gaye.
