Raymond Klages
Raymond Klages was an American songwriter and lyricist born on June 10, 1888, in Baltimore, Maryland. He passed away on March 20, 1947, in Glendale, California, due to a heart attack. Klages was active primarily during the 1920s and 1930s, collaborating with notable composers such as Louis Alter, Harry Carroll, Jesse Greer, Al Hoffman, Howard Quicksell, J. Fred Coots, Jimmy Monaco, and Vincent Rose.

Klages is best known for co-writing the song "Just You, Just Me," which became a standard in the jazz repertoire. He also penned the lyrics for Fats Waller’s “I’m More Than Satisfied” in 1927. His partnership with Jesse Greer was particularly successful, producing songs like “Climbing Up the Ladder of Love” for Earl Carroll’s Vanities in 1926 and “One Step to Heaven” for the musical comedy Say When! in 1928. In 1929, they contributed to the films Tide of Empire and Hollywood Revue of 1929, and their song for the film Marianne became the beloved standard "Just You, Just Me."

In 1930, Klages and Greer scored the film Jazz Cinderella, starring Myrna Loy, and contributed "Golden Sands" to the popular escapist songs of the Depression era. In 1931, Klages collaborated with Jack Meskill and Frank Skinner on the lyrics to Vincent Rose’s “Are You Blue,” another significant hit.

During World War I, Klages served in the 108th Field Artillery and later joined a New York music-publishing company, where he wrote the Broadway stage score for "Sally, Irene and Mary." He joined ASCAP in 1923 and wrote numerous other popular songs, including "Doin' the Raccoon," "Blue Shadows," "Pardon Me, Pretty Baby," and "$21 a Day—Once a Month."

Klages also contributed to the first of the Swing Symphony cartoons by Walter Lantz in 1941, writing lyrics to Felix Bernard’s music for $21 a Day—Once a Month, and renewed his collaboration with Greer for the film Top Sergeant Mulligan. His work remains influential, with "Just You, Just Me" being recorded by numerous artists over the decades.
