Billy Bartholomew
Billy Bartholomew, born William Andrew Bartholomew on October 1, 1901, in London, was a notable British jazz and entertainment musician, recognized for his skills as an alto saxophonist and bandleader. His career gained significant traction in the 1920s and 1930s, particularly in Germany, where he moved in 1924. Initially, Bartholomew worked with Eric Borchard and Julian Fuhs before establishing his own ensemble, Eden Five, in 1927, which eventually evolved into a big band. This band achieved considerable success, performing at prestigious venues such as the Berlin Delphi-Palast in 1928. Despite its acclaim, the orchestra primarily recorded for the Kristall and Odeon labels, producing music that was not predominantly in the jazz style, despite featuring talented soloists.

Bartholomew's career in Germany faced challenges due to xenophobic sentiments, leading him to employ only German musicians in his band from 1937. However, his engagements dwindled, prompting his return to England in 1938, where he transitioned to performing as a music clown and entertainment artist. Billy Bartholomew passed away in London on January 19, 1972. His contributions to the jazz and entertainment scenes during his active years remain a part of his enduring legacy.
