Ben Kynard
Ben Kynard (February 28, 1920 – July 5, 2012) was an influential American jazz saxophonist known for his work with the Lionel Hampton Orchestra and his composition of the jazz standard "Red Top." Born in Eureka Springs, Arkansas, Kynard learned to play the saxophone from his brother and graduated from Sumner High School in Kansas City, Kansas, in 1938.

Kynard's early career involved performing in nightclubs, and after serving in the U.S. Army, he joined Lionel Hampton's orchestra in 1946. During his time with Hampton, Kynard composed "Red Top," a piece that became widely covered by artists such as Gene Ammons, Dexter Gordon, and Erroll Garner. Despite its popularity, Kynard did not receive significant royalties from the song due to contractual agreements with Hampton.

After leaving Hampton's band in 1953, Kynard worked for the United States Postal Service in Kansas City for 32 years while continuing to perform in local jazz clubs and compose music. He participated in 51 recording sessions, collaborating with notable musicians like Billie Holiday, Willis Jackson, and Sonny Parker.

Ben Kynard was also the uncle of Charles Kynard, a renowned organist. Ben Kynard passed away in Kansas City at the age of 92, leaving behind a legacy as a talented saxophonist and composer in the jazz genre.
