Dave Crawford
David Bernard Crawford (October 24, 1943 – June 1988) was an influential American R&B musician, songwriter, radio personality, and record producer. Born in Jacksonville, Florida, Crawford was a prodigious talent on the piano, performing with gospel greats such as Albertina Walker, Shirley Caesar, and The Caravans during his teenage years. He gained regional fame as a radio personality known as "The Demon" at WOBS in Jacksonville and later at WTMP in Tampa.

Crawford's songwriting career took off with "What a Man," recorded by Linda Lyndell in 1968 and later popularized by Salt-n-Pepa as "Whatta Man" in 1994. In 1969, he joined Atlantic Records as a staff producer alongside Brad Shapiro, working with artists like Wilson Pickett and Dee Dee Warwick, and producing The J. Geils Band's debut album. He co-wrote "Precious, Precious" with his cousin Jackie Moore, achieving chart success in 1970.

As a freelance producer, Crawford collaborated with Candi Staton, penning the hit "Young Hearts Run Free" in 1976. He also worked with B.B. King, The Mighty Clouds of Joy, and Phyllis Hyman. In 1974, Crawford founded L.A. Records in Los Angeles, though the venture was financially unsuccessful, leading him back to Miami as a gospel radio DJ.

Tragically, Crawford was murdered in Brooklyn, New York, in June 1988. He was initially buried in a pauper's grave but was later reinterred in Jacksonville with the help of his cousin Jackie Moore. Despite his untimely death, Crawford's musical legacy endures, with his works continuing to generate significant posthumous earnings.
